I am a postdoctoral researcher, working on building both the theory and praxis around aquaculture governance through a project focusing on the development and implementation of an aquaculture governance indicator framework, with colleagues from the Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University and Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program.
As an environmental social scientist, my general research interests are around the nexus of human-environment relations, with grounded experience in coastal, small-scale fisheries and communities (Cambodia), marine protected areas (Philippines), migration, social wellbeing, and social resilience. Other areas of experience include climate change adaptation, climate resilience, and natural resource management.
I have a PhD in International Development (University of Ottawa), a Master of Environmental Science (University of Toronto) and a Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology/Environmental Science (Western University). My doctoral research examined the changing dynamics within Cambodian coastal communities and small-scale fishery livelihoods through the lens of labour migration, with aim of broadening our understanding of social resilience through a social wellbeing lens.
I have both Canadian and international teaching experience. In Cambodia, I was a guest lecturer for a social science research methods course at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. In South Korea, I was a visiting professor at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, teaching a summer course ('Environment and Society'). In Canada, I have been a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa, teaching several undergraduate-level courses at the School of International Development & Global Studies and the Dept of Geography.
Over the span of a decade, I have worked at the intersection of environment, policy, and international development. I have held positions across various levels, from federal government (Environment Specialist at the Canadian International Development Agency) and non-governmental (Project Officer at WorldFish Center) to intergovernmental (United Nations University - Institute for Water, Environment, and Health) and applied research-focused institutions (International Development Research Centre - Climate Change Program). Across these positions, I have been involved in areas ranging from research and environment-policy analysis/implementation to knowledge brokering/transfer/translation and project coordination.
